Hospice of the Valleys
Hospice of the Valleys is a local charity that provides, specialist palliative care to the people of Blaenau Gwent. Established in Tredegar in 1991 the charity has grown and developed over the years and is now the preferred provider of specialist palliative care in Blaenau Gwent for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The care and support the charity provides is bespoke to each patients needs and is provided free of charge.
Specialist palliative care services include an out-patient department, Hospice at Home, bereavement care and complementary therapy. In 2016-2017 the Hospice provided care for 612 patients, an increase of 20% on the previous year.
In 2016/17 it cost £1.79m to deliver Hospice Care to the population of Blaenau Gwent and with only a small percentage of income from the local health board the hospice relies on the support of the local community to provide these services free of charge to the patients and families that need it.
The demand on our services continues to rise and in 2016/17 we saw a 20% increase in our patient referrals. Therefore the cost of delivering our care free of charge to the people of Blaenau Gwent also continues to rise.
